The house at 55-57 Concord Road stands on the outside of the bend where the old road from the centre to Concord and Bedford turns south. It is the one survivor of the five houses that rounded the corner on the 1853 map, which puts the name of Elijah Bacon Hill on this, the central one; he probably built the row in the 1840s. MACRIS dates the house "c. 1830" from its Federal and Greek Revival style, but the deeds show that Hill bought the land bare in 1842, so the house was built between 1842 and 1853.
The land was part of a fifteen- or sixteen-acre field called "the Minister Lot", which John Parker of Billerica left to his daughter Maria, the wife of Marshall Preston, by his will of 1831: "about fifteen acres of land, called the Minister Lot, bounded easterly on the road, southerly on said road and land I bought of Solomon Pollard, westerly on land of Francis Richardson". How Parker acquired it has not been found. On February 14, 1842, the Prestons sold the lot in halves to Lyman Haynes and Dudley Foster, and the same day the three men quitclaimed to Elijah B. Hill, yeoman, for $250, one acre at the corner, beginning "at a small locust marked" and running "by the road leading to Concord to the corner" and about nineteen rods along the road. A large locust tree still marked the corner on the 1924 survey of the lot.
Hill, believed to have been a carpenter, covered the acre with houses. In 1861 he sold the westernmost one to William Richardson, the boundary drawn "10 feet East of the end of the house"; it later became the Munroe and Benoit place next door. When Hill died on March 29, 1865, his will divided his estate among his children Emery E., Sylvester S. and Lucy R. Hill, and the inventory listed the "Preston Land and Buildings 1 a." at $1,250. Sylvester and Lucy released their two thirds to Emery, who lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He sold the west house and the land behind it to Henry T. Munroe in 1865 and 1866, and in September 1870 sold the rest, "a dwelling house of two tenements" on about two acres, to Susan Hamilton for $2,500.
Susan Dodge Adams Hamilton, widow of Amos Adams of South Billerica, owned the house on the 1875 map. Her will, proved in April 1878, left it to her grandson Eugene A. Stowell, who passed it through a straw deed to his wife Ella and, after her death, back to himself. In 1881 Stowell, then of Guide Rock, Nebraska, sold it for $1,900 to Susan's sister Martha A. Dodge, widow of George H. Dodge. In 1897 she conveyed it to her unmarried daughter, also Martha A. Dodge, keeping a life estate; the 1889 map shows "Mrs. M. A. Dodge and daughter" here. After the daughter's death in 1909 her executor, Herbert A. King, sold the Town a strip off the corner to widen the road "at a point opposite Charnstaffe Lane", and in 1912 sold the house to Clara E. Sexton, who lived across the road.
Sexton kept part of the land and in 1913 sold the house with a lot of 243 by 232 feet to Alonzo H. Sanborn. It changed hands quickly: to Francis H. Kenney and then Peter T. Gillooly in 1915, and from Gillooly's widow to Flora Gertrude Colgate in 1918. In 1924 the Colgates had the lot surveyed by John T. Brown (Plan Book 45, Plan 10) and divided it, selling the house on 22,025 square feet to Mildred McKeen and keeping a 17,000-square-foot lot to the south. That division fixed the present parcel. McKeen owned the house, apart from a brief conveyance to Lucy E. Brennon (1929-1932), until 1947, when she sold it to Earle W. and Hazel E. Evans.
The Evanses sold in 1965. In 1973 the house was a two-family rental. In 1990 Eastern Bank foreclosed a 1986 mortgage and bought the house at auction, then sold it to the 55-57 Concord Road Realty Trust, which sold it in 1991 to the present owners. The assessor lists it as a two-family house on 0.506 acres. The house is in the Billerica Center Historic District (local historic district, 1990).
