Michael Hayes
Michael Hayes
| Died | 1896-11-26 Billerica |
Michael Hayes (about 1819 to 1896) was a farmer in West Billerica who owned the old Asa Hill farm on what is now West Street for twenty-six years, and for a short time the street carried his name. On June 9, 1870, while living in Acton, he bought from Prescott Reed of Stow and Francis A. Wheeler of Billerica, for $3,700, "a farm containing one hundred thirty acres, more or less, with the buildings on the same, situated in the southwest part of Billerica": about 100 acres on the Treble Cove road with the farmhouse, and a thirty-acre wood lot in the north part of Carlisle (Middlesex North Book 74, Page 174). With the deed he paid $1,500 to clear an 1862 mortgage on the farm (Book 74, Page 172). The house was the brick house that Asa Hill had built about 1825 (see Asa Hill House), and the town maps of 1875 and 1889 mark it "M. Hays".
In 1893 Hayes mortgaged the farm for $825 to Patrick Mahoney of Billerica (Book 243, Page 358). When the town's committee on street names made its first list in 1896, it called the road past his farm "Hayes street, running westerly from Winning street to Carlisle line, W. Billerica", but the list adopted at town meeting in 1899 named it West Street.
Hayes died in Billerica on November 26, 1896, at the age of 77. Mahoney was the executor of his will, and under a license of the Probate Court he sold the 130 acres "with the buildings thereon" at public auction on October 18, 1898 to John B. Stearns for $3,100 (Book 302, Page 372). Hayes's widow, Mary Hayes, released her dower to Stearns, signing with her mark (Book 302, Page 373).
