Charles M. Hannaford (1825 to 1900) was a mason who lived in Billerica Centre for about thirty years, first in the house on Concord Road known as the Hannaford House and later on Churnstaff Lane. He was born in Bedford on July 25, 1825, a son of William and Mehitable Hannaford, whose older children had been born in Newbury, Vermont. His father died in December 1836, aged 37, and in March 1838 his mother, Mehitable Lovejoy, married Samuel Lovejoy of Billerica. Ira N. Hannaford, a farmer, was his older brother.
On December 16, 1852 David Parker, yeoman, sold him for $600 "a certain lot of land situate in said Billerica Centre with the buildings thereon", on the east side of the road from Billerica to Bedford, at the end of the lane to the old Parker tanyard. The 1853 map shows "C. Hannaford" there. In 1859 he declared the place his homestead, and in 1863 he and his wife, Jane A. Hannaford, mortgaged it to John O. Richardson for $150. He also held "the Hannaford Place", nine acres in the south part of town on the road to George A. Kimball's, and other land on the Concord road and Churnstaff Lane.
His later years were spent in debt. In 1878 the sheriff sold his rights in a seven-acre tract on the Concord road that he had bought from William Whiting in 1870. In 1880 he mortgaged the Centre house and the Hannaford Place to Anthony Jones for $400, and in 1882 he gave a small mortgage on six tracts, three of them on the south side of Churnstaff Lane, to Wilder Bennett of Lowell. In November 1883 Anthony C. Rivers paid off the Jones loan, the executrix of Anthony Jones made an entry to foreclose the older Richardson mortgage, and Hannaford deeded the Centre house to Rivers for $700, subject to the mortgages. By 1875 he was living in an older house on Churnstaff Lane.
He was on the list of Billerica voters in 1880. He died in Billerica on March 5, 1900, aged 74, and that December his administrator and his widow sold the Hannaford Place to Sears J. Cook.
