Artemas Hill (1831 - 1849) Lyman Haynes (1849 - 1852) |
The Josiah Hill House stands on the west side of Concord Road near the Bedford line, on land that was once the southern end of the Jonathan Hill farm at Hill's Mills. On Feb. 25, 1785, Jonathan Hill sold his sons Job Hill and Josiah Hill 40 1/2 acres "in the Southerly part of said Town" for 152 pounds, and his will of 1795 gave the two brothers "the southern part of my farm in Billerica on the east side of Bedford-road" as well. Job took the part toward the mill (see the Job Hill House); Josiah's share was about eighteen acres between the Bedford road and the brook below his father's mill, bounded by Job on the north and west and by the Stearns and Spalding farms on the south. No deed dividing the brothers' land was ever recorded.
Josiah Hill (1757-1840) married Susanna of Bedford in 1789, and from at least 1796 every record calls him "of Bedford". His own house stood just over the town line, down a side road the deeds call "a road leading to Josiah Hill's" (later "to Constantine Hill's", after the son who inherited it). The house on the Billerica land was lived in by his sons. When Job sold Josiah three acres across the road in 1829, the deed described them as lying "opposite the house where Elijah B. Hill now lives", which places Elijah Bacon Hill in this house. On Nov. 7 and 8, 1831, Josiah settled his Billerica land on two sons. Elijah received the neighboring lots (one of them, the "School House Pasture" just north of the house, he sold to William Whitford). Artemas Hill, then 22, paid $1,200 for "about eighteen acres ... with all the buildings thereon standing" and 5 1/2 acres across the road. That deed is the first record of buildings on the lot. Whether Josiah himself built the house around his 1789 marriage is not shown by any record. The Billerica assessor dates the present building to about 1860.
Artemas Hill mortgaged the farm to Eckley Stearns of Boston in 1832 and sold it on Feb. 10, 1849 for $3,800 to Lyman Haynes. The deed describes the farm as 25 acres bounded by William Whitford "as the wall and old ditch ... now runs", by Jonathan Hill's land "till it comes to an old dam", and by the brook "to a stone bridge at land of Elijah B. Hill". The same description was copied into every deed for the next 75 years. Haynes sold to George Clark on April 1, 1852, taking back a $1,600 mortgage that he assigned in 1854 to Marshall Preston of Lexington. "G. Clark" is the name on the 1853 map. Clark died intestate in 1855, leaving a widow and seven young children and an estate of $1,800 in real estate and $336 in tools, stock, hay, carrots and cordwood. On March 31, 1856, his widow Maria F. Clark, as administratrix, sold "the 'Homestead' of said deceased" at auction on the premises to Jonas P. Heywood of Concord for $2,205.
In 1862 Heywood put the farm in his wife Irene's name, deeding it through Orville M. Blodgett "to her sole and separate use". In 1867 the Heywoods sold it to Francis A. Wheeler of Concord for $2,000. Wheeler, who had added a 6-acre field on the east side of the road, sold everything on May 9, 1871 for $4,500 to Joseph Alexander, "formerly of Portland in the State of Maine", the "J. Alexander" of the 1875 atlas. After Alexander's death his widow and children released the farm to his son Noble D. Alexander, who paid off the old mortgages and on Nov. 23, 1891 sold it to Josephine R. Holland of Newton.
The farm changed hands quickly in 1899. The Hollands sold it to Martha A. McKay of Brookline in May. She deeded it in July to Lottie C. Willey, who soon married Charles R. McKay. The McKays sold it in October to Frank Moore of Billerica, and Moore sold it in December to Eliza Grady, wife of Joseph Grady of Lowell. John W. Grady went bankrupt in 1906, and his trustee's claim to the farm passed to C. Percy Tuttle, who released it to Mrs. Grady in 1912. She sold the east-side field that year and deeded the house farm to John W. Grady in 1919. After his death his executor, under a license from the Probate Court, sold the 25 acres "with the buildings thereon" for $2,100 on Aug. 19, 1924 to Elizabeth A. Cruise of Boston.
In 1946 Mrs. Cruise sold the farm, then surveyed as 22 acres on "the Westerly side of Concord Road" running back to "the thread of the Mill Brook", to Philip J. and Violet E. Bergstrom. In 1954 the Bergstroms had a 150 by 150 foot house lot, Lot D, surveyed by James B. Monahan (Plan Book 84, Plan 125) and sold it with the buildings. It has since passed through several private owners, most recently in 2026, and the deeds still describe the same 22,230 square feet on Concord Road.
The house is not listed in the MACRIS database.

Agreement dividing "a certain tract of land being wood land lying in the township of Carlisle," 66 acres 46 rods, which their father Jonathan Hill "late of Billerica deceased" by "his last will and testament gave and bequeathed unto us" and "willed to be divided" one quarter to Job, one quarter to Josiah and one half to Jonathan. Bounded from a range way southeast 246 rods on woodland of the heirs of John Hill, by a stone wall, and back to the range way by John Nichols. On Dec. 9, 1796 they laid off about 32 acres to Jonathan "as his full half," about 17 1/2 acres to Job and about 16 3/4 acres to Josiah, and declared themselves "fully satisfied with the division." Signed Dec. 10, 1796; recorded Jan. 22, 1799. Carlisle town book 6, pages 368-370. A woodlot, not the homestead, but it shows the 1795 will being carried out by the son Jonathan who kept the farm.
