Billerica Memorial High School Track and Field

Billerica Memorial High School Track and Field

Billerica Memorial High School Track and Field is the track and field program of Billerica Memorial High School, with boys' and girls' teams in the outdoor spring season and the indoor winter season. Its beginnings go back to the relay teams of Howe High School, which won the Pearson Cup for the rural high schools around Lowell three times from 1929 to 1931, but the Warrior counted the spring team of 1959, coached by Roger Samson, as the first organized track team in the school's history. Girls ran with the boys' winter team in the middle 1970s and had their own indoor team from the winter of 1978-79, which won a state meet title in its first season. The girls' teams won the school's first MIAA team championships in the sport in the 2020s: the Division 3 indoor titles of 2023, 2024 and 2025 and the outdoor titles of 2023 and 2025 in Division 3 and 2026 in Division 2. Several of its head coaches, among them Roger Samson, Mike Granfield, Joe Bradford and Cullen Hagan, also coached the teams of Billerica Memorial High School Cross Country.

In the winter of 1926-27 Mrs. Alice Pearson of Lowell offered a cup for competition among relay teams of the rural high schools about Lowell, run as one of the features of a meet in the Lowell High School gymnasium; Wilmington won the first year, and the next winter Howe was "again a competitor in the relay race contest for rural High Schools at Lowell, but without success." In 1929, under the science teacher and coach Wilfred W. Clark, the Howe relay team beat Chelmsford and Wilmington and won the Pearson Cup, which Mrs. Pearson presented to the school at a special assembly with a medal for each runner. Howe won it again in 1930, and in 1931 the principal reported "the winning, for the third time, of the Pearson Cup, which now becomes the permanent possession of the school," adding that "the boys' athletic coach supervised work in track, baseball and football"; the coach was Royal S. Adams, the school's athletic instructor from 1929. Track also appears among the activities of seniors in the Howe yearbooks of the 1950s.

"In the spring of 1959 something new was added to Billerica's athletic program, namely, the first organized track team in the school's history," the Warrior of 1960 reported. Coach Roger Samson's team went 6-1, losing only to Bedford, and won the informal Lowell Suburban League title; the team of 1960 was undefeated and won the league again. That year the athletic director, Charles L. Lampson, asked the superintendent for an assistant coach: "The first is an assistant coach for spring track. The sport has grown tremendously among students who are unable to participate in the contact sports and it is too much to expect one coach to handle the field and running events alone." Through the early 1960s the team was second or third in the Suburban League, set new school records nearly every spring, and went 9-3 in 1965 with Frank Martin as assistant coach. "Including all sports, the Billerica Track Team has been, perhaps, the most successful team in the history of our school," the yearbook wrote in 1963. A winter team ran in the Colonial Track League in 1964-65, when a Billerica sprinter won the Class C state title in the 300-yard run.

In its early years the school had no track facility of its own. The annual Town Meeting of 1966 postponed an article for $4,500 "to formulate plans and designs for making a football field and track field at the rear of Memorial High School," and the meeting of 1967 voted $5,000 for the plans; the 1968 yearbook, after a 1-8 season in 1967, looked forward to "the current possibility of a complete track facility." The track was built at the new Marshall school on Floyd Street, which opened in 1972; the field and track behind it, from 1973 to 2019 also the home field of Billerica Memorial High School Football, were named in 2006 for the retiring superintendent, Robert J. Calabrese, as the Dr. Robert J. Calabrese Track and Field Stadium, now Calabrese Stadium. The winter teams trained on the lower-level track inside the Marshall Middle School, which a 1997 yearbook called "the Marshall basement track" and which the schools refurbished for the track and field teams in 2019, the year they also resurfaced the outdoor track. The stadium of the new high school, BMHS Stadium, is ringed by its own track.

Samson returned to the spring team in 1969 after three years away. His 1970 team went 6-2, tied for second in the Merrimack Valley League and beat Chelmsford for the first time in nine years, the meet decided by the final relay; the 1971 team went 8-1, losing only to Andover, and at the Town Meeting of March 13, 1971 the selectmen commended "Coach Roger Samson (Track)" and the coach of Billerica Memorial High School Hockey and gave the members of both teams certificates. Winter track came back in 1970-71 "after a lapse of six years from competition," under Mike Granfield, in the North Shore Indoor Track League. Samson called his 1973 spring team the strongest in the history of Billerica track: it went 8-1, losing only to the league champion Andover in a meet that went down to the last relay, and won the Merrimack Valley League Relays, the program's first team trophy. The winter team joined the Merrimack Valley Conference in 1973-74 and went 6-2. In January 1978 a Billerica senior won the high school mile at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden in 4:14, a school record that stood for 37 years.

The girls of the program first competed on the boys' winter team; the 1976 yearbook named three seniors on the 1975-76 team as "the pioneers of girls' track at BMHS." In the winter of 1978-79 the girls had a team of their own: "After many years of running with the boys it finally happened. Girls winter track has become a recognized team," the yearbook said, thanking Mr. Granfield for developing it and Miss Hood for its equipment. That team went undefeated and won a state meet title, and the team of 1979-80, coached by Mike Granfield with Joe Bradford and John Lancaster, "completed its second consecutive undefeated season to win the North Shore Track League"; its seniors, some of them nationally ranked in the relays, "have never known defeat in a Billerica Track Uniform." The same winter the boys' indoor team "completed its first undefeated season to win the MVC." The conference grew to two divisions in 1980-81, and the girls' indoor team, coached by Joe Bradford and Shirley Granfield, was undefeated Merrimack Valley champion in 1981-82 and co-champion in 1982-83. The boys' indoor team of 1984-85 went 7-1, second in the conference to the state champion Chelmsford.

Daniel Murphy took over the girls' winter team in 1986-87 and coached it through most of the next twenty years. His team went 7-1 in 1987-88 and won the conference outright in 1989 and 1990, "winning back-to-back championships in the MVC in 1989 and 1990" with a four-year record of 23-4, and "the team now holds the record for the longest winning streak, thirteen games, in the highly competitive MVC." Joe Bradford coached the boys' winter team in the late 1980s, and Chip Jones from about 1990 to 1993. The boys' spring team of 1991 beat Chelmsford in a dual meet, and "the team accomplished what no other Billerica spring track team could accomplish in twenty-four years." The boys' indoor team was Merrimack Valley Conference small school champion in 1993-94, and the spring team of 1994 was second in the small school division. Ken Coutoumas coached the boys from 1994-95 into the 2000s; in 1995 a Billerica senior won the New England indoor 1000 meters and the 4x400 relay won the State Class meet and ran at the New England and national championships.

Both programs moved from the small school to the large school division of the conference in 1995-96. The girls' indoor team won the Merrimack Valley Conference Division II title in 1996-97 and, moved up to Division I, lost only to Chelmsford in 1997-98; the boys' sprint medley relay won the Class A state title in the spring of 1998, and the girls' shot put team won the State Class A relays in 1999. Donald Fay coached the girls' spring team in 1998 and 1999. In 2001-02 a Billerica shot putter won the Class A, All-State and New England indoor titles. Murphy was named Coach of the Year after the 2004-05 indoor season, his 2005-06 team won the conference Division 2 title, and he retired in 2006 after thirty years in the Billerica schools. Joe Bradford coached the boys in the middle 2000s, the girls' spring team of 2008 qualified seventeen runners and throwers for the state meet, the most in school history, and the boys' indoor team of 2009-10, under second-year coach Matt Flood, won the Merrimack Valley Conference Division II championship.

In the 2010s the program's state champions were mostly individuals and relays: a 100-meter champion in 2014; a new school mile record in 2015, when a runner "broke the 37-year old BMHS record for the mile with a time of 4:14:08"; the MIAA boys' outdoor 4x400 relay title and a javelin champion who also won the New England title in 2016; champions in the 400-meter hurdles and the shot put in 2017; and boys' and girls' indoor two-mile champions in 2018. By 2018 David Lucia was coaching the indoor teams, Shaun Corum the boys' spring team and Scott Arsenault the girls' spring team, and in 2019-20 both indoor teams were Merrimack Valley Conference champions, the boys under Corum and the girls under Cullen Hagan.

The girls' indoor team won the MIAA Division 3 championship in the winter of 2022-23, the program's first team state title. Coached by Hagan, it repeated at the Reggie Lewis Center on February 17, 2024 with 59 points and won a third straight Division 3 title there on February 14, 2025 with 75.5 points to Milton's 46, while the boys finished second. The girls' outdoor team under Arsenault won its first outdoor team title, the Division 3 championship at Fitchburg State University, in May 2023 with 83.25 points to Mansfield's 69.75, and won Division 3 again at Westfield State on June 1, 2025 with 92 points. Moved up to Division 2, the girls were second indoors to Westford Academy in February 2026, then won the Division 2 outdoor championship at Merrimack College on May 31, 2026 with 70 points to Westford's 65, the program's third outdoor state title in four years; the boys were second. The boys won the MSTCA Division 3 State Relays at the Reggie Lewis Center on January 21, 2024.
