Hajjar School
The Hajjar School, formally the Dr. Solomon G. Hajjar Elementary School, stands on about 15 acres between Call Street and Rogers Street in North Billerica, on land that was farmed for two centuries before the Town bought and took it for a school in 1967. The school opened in September 1970 and is named for Dr. Solomon Gunther Hajjar, the town's school physician and a former chairman of the Board of Health, who died on December 28, 1966.
The ground was part of the Pollard homestead on the east side of the Concord River. In 1762 and 1772 John Pollard deeded the 80-acre homestead to his son Jonathan Pollard. After Jonathan's death in 1806 the farm passed to his only heir, his daughter Olive, who as Olive Barrett sold it in 1848 to Samuel Rogers, land "which I inherited from my father Jonathan Pollard".
In March 1852 Samuel Rogers sold the western part of his farm, "sixty acres more or less" with the buildings, running from the Fordway Road to the river, to Robert Call for $2,750, "being a part of the farm owned by said Samuel Rogers". The boundary between the two farms ran through the center of a ditch, and that ditch still divides the two main pieces of the school site. Robert Call mortgaged the farm in 1854 and went through insolvency; in 1856 his assignee's deed to Joseph H. Call was undone when Joseph released the homestead back to Robert. In November 1883 Robert Call, for $900, deeded to Joseph H. Call three tracts, one of them "one other tract of land containing six acres more or less" running south from the new road (now Call Street) between the Rogers heirs' land and land of Owen Murningham. That six-acre lot is the western part of the school land.
Joseph H. Call left the six acres by will to Ella A. Ruth, who sold them in August 1939 to Florence R. Ritchie; the same lot, "six acres, more or less, on the southerly side of Call Street", passed to Roderick Bruce and Dorothy Marie Spaulding in 1939 and to Warrick B. and Mildred P. Budden in 1949. It was sold to private owners in 1957, registered in the Land Court in 1958 (case 28054) and sold again in 1961.
The eastern part of the school land was the Rogers homestead itself. After Samuel Rogers died in December 1861, his administrator sold the 37-acre homestead in 1868 to Charles P. Talbot and Thomas Talbot, bounded on the north "by the ditch on land of Robert Call". The Talbot heirs deeded it to The Talbot Mills in 1884, and the company held it as Lot 8 on its 1926-27 plan until 1939, when it sold the 17.56 acres at Rogers Street and Call Road to Newell A. and Ethel Hoyt. The Hoyts sold the part along the Call ditch in 1947; it was divided into lots in 1949, passed through several private owners and was registered in the Land Court in 1963 (case 24227).
At the 1967 annual town meeting (Article 116) Billerica voted to acquire about 15 acres off Call, Rogers and Beacon Streets for school purposes, with money for the land and for architects for a new elementary school in North Billerica. In October 1967 the owners of the two registered parcels deeded them to the Town, and on October 2, 1967 the Board of Selectmen took the remaining eight parcels "for the construction and maintenance of school buildings", among them a lot "with the buildings situated thereon" fronting 125 feet on the west side of Rogers Street, which gives the school its Rogers Street address. The site is shown on the plan "Surveyed for Billerica Permanent School Building Committee" by Emmons, Fleming and Bienvenu (Plan Book 105, Plan 166).
The Permanent School Building Committee began construction in the fall of 1968, and the work was slowed by strikes. The school opened in September 1970 with 31 classrooms and more than 1,000 pupils and was dedicated on October 18, 1970. The Town of Billerica still owns the 15-acre site. In 2020 the Town took street-layout easements along Call Street when the street was accepted as a public way.
Plans for the school by Crimp, Brown and Fisher, Inc. were filed with the state Department of Public Safety in July 1968.

Jonathan Pollard of Billerica, yeoman, died intestate within two months before Sept. 18, 1806. That day his widow Olive Pollard (by her mark) and "the only heir at law", Olive Rogers of Chelmsford, renounced administration and asked that Lieut. Stephen Barrett of Billerica be appointed; the court at Chelmsford appointed him the same day, on a $30,000 bond with Zaccheus Shed and Peter Marshall. The inventory taken Oct. 6, 1806 by Oliver Crosby, Jeremiah Patten and Josiah B. Richardson lists "The Homestead of said Deceased situated in said Billerica containing about 91 Acres with the Buildings thereon" at $3,072, the Dutton lot of about 50 acres, Butterfield Meadow in Chelmsford, 18 acres, Broad Meadow, about 7 acres, half a pew and half a stable at the meeting-house: real estate $5,607, the whole $6,674.47. Accepted at Concord Oct. 7, 1806.

Samuel Rogers who last dwelt in Billerica died on December 1, 1861, intestate, leaving a widow Sarah Rogers and children Susan P. Gordon and Frances S. K. Rogers of Billerica, Olive W. Swan of Granville, Vt., and Barrett Rogers of Lowell. On Nov. 10, 1863 Abigail L. Jenness of Lowell, a principal creditor, petitioned that George Stevens of Lowell be appointed administrator; the citation was issued Dec. 3, 1863 for the fourth Tuesday of December and the hearing continued to January 1864. The later papers (28 pages in all) include the administration under which Gardner Parker was licensed on Dec. 24, 1867 to sell the real estate.

Licensed by the Probate Court at Cambridge on Dec. 24, 1867, after notice three weeks in the Lowell Weekly Journal, Parker sold at public auction on Jan. 20, 1868 to the Talbots, the highest bidders, for $1,235, "a certain parcel of land containing thirty seven acres more or less with the buildings thereon, situate in said Billerica and known as the 'Homestead' of the late Samuel Rogers": from its southeast corner at "the road leading from Billerica Meeting House to Canal Mills, so called", west by one Dix and one Pollard to a ditch, north by Robert Call to a stone wall, west and north by the wall to the Concord River, east and south "on said River and Cove and land of J.
