This house was erected here following the Revolution, when a period of prosperity came. James Abbott built one of the larger homes to go up around the Common at this time. Mr. Abbott was a merchant situated directly on the road of travel in the new country. He was a respected citizen and was chosen to serve as Representative to the Massachusetts Legislature.
The building served as Billerica's first post office, where Jonathan Bowers served as the town's first postmaster, beginning in 1797. It continued as a post office for 120 years and housed other businesses as well. From 1929 to 1945, it was the Billerica Trust Company bank.
In more recent years, the location was Mazmanian Rugs and then the Center Cafe.
