John F. Baldwin
John Fry Baldwin, who signed his deeds John F. Baldwin, was a Billerica farmer and the owner in the 1850s and 1860s of the Nathaniel Davidson House on Boston Road. He was born on March 14, 1823, the eldest child of Joel Baldwin and Mary Fry. His father, a grandson of a Billerica Baldwin, moved the family from Lyndeborough, New Hampshire, to Billerica in 1825 and farmed west of the Shawshin River, at the first place south of the Wilmington road. His brothers were Joel Baldwin, Charles Henry and William Henry Baldwin, and his sister Mary Ann married William Manning.
He married Fanny A., and their daughter Susan Maria was born on January 25, 1848. The census of 1850 lists him as John Baldwin 3d, a farmer of 27 with real estate worth $750, living with Fanny A., then 23, and their daughter Susan M.
In 1853 he took in trade from Charles G. Fletcher the old Davidson house and lot on the Boston road, which Fletcher had just bought on the condition that no public house, hotel, tavern or inn should ever be kept there. Baldwin sold the place in 1864 to Lucia S. Little, wife of the Rev. Elbridge G. Little of Middleborough, repeating the condition, bought it back in 1865 from Emanuel Downing of Boston, to whom the Littles had sold it, and in 1867 sold it to Leonard Osborn of Lunenburg. The condition against a tavern still runs with the land of the Nathaniel Davidson Barn next door. Hazen records that Eveline Richardson, born in 1833, a daughter of Francis Richardson, married John F. Baldwin on November 28, 1861; this was probably the same man.
