This beautiful home was built in 1811 by Joseph Locke, graduate of Darthmouth College and lawyer. He practiced law and lived here for 32 years. He became the first Lowell judge when Lowell Court was established in 1836. Formally, this site was part of the Jonathan Danforth homestead from the 1650s. In 1885, George E. Stearns bought the house and operated it as a hotel for 10 years. Dr. Buck returned it to a private residence. Dr. A Warren Stearns, psychiatrist and dean of Tufts Medical School, bought the house back into the Stearns family in 1915. His son Charles Stearns continued to own the home at least through 1973.
