Josiah B. Richardson Outbuilding
| Address | 202 Pollard St |
| Built | 1852 |
| Demolished | 1875 |
| Other Lot Structures | Francis Blanchard House (Built 1800) |
The Josiah B. Richardson Outbuilding was a small building at the corner of the Boston or Fordway road (now Pollard Street) and the Salem road, on the same one-acre lot as the Francis Blanchard House at 202 Pollard Street. It is known only from the 1853 Walling map of Billerica, which joins two squares with a brace to the name "J. B. Richardson": the lower one is the house, which still stands, and the upper one, about twenty-five metres to the north at the Salem road corner, is this building. No deed or other record names it or says what it was used for.
The corner acre was cut from a seventy-acre tract on the east side of the road "leading from Billerica meeting house to the Ford way," which Edward Rand, a Newburyport merchant, sold to Enoch Chase in 1795 and Chase sold to Thomas Richardson in 1796. In 1800 Richardson, who kept the tavern across the road, sold "about one acre" at the corner to Francis Blanchard, a blacksmith, for $290, on condition that no retailer of spirits or innholder should ever use the premises. Blanchard mortgaged the acre to Josiah Crosby in 1807, and in 1810 a deputy sheriff seized his equity in "about one acre of land with all the buildings thereon, situate in Billerica nearly opposite the house and store of Stephen Barrett junr." and sold it to Josiah B. Richardson for $145; Crosby released the mortgage title to Richardson in 1812.
Josiah Brown Richardson (1773-1860) held the corner for fifty years. Hazen's genealogical register describes him as "a blacksmith at the corner; selectman, and colonel of militia," and the deeds call him gentleman and esquire in 1811 and 1820 and blacksmith in 1845. He mortgaged the acre "with all the buildings thereon" to the Town in 1820 and to Dr. Zadok Howe in 1845. With two blacksmiths in succession owning a lot where two highways met, the corner building may well have been a smithy, but the 1853 map also labels a separate "B. Shop" just south of the old burying ground, next to the schoolhouse and off Richardson's lot, so the building at the corner could equally have been a barn or a small store.
Richardson died at Medford on December 25, 1860. His heirs, his daughter Elizabeth Derby and the children of his late daughter Mrs. Teel, released the place to Elbridge Teel, who in April 1862 sold the acre "with the buildings thereon" to Samuel Osgood of Chelmsford for $1,000. By the time of the 1875 Beers map only one building, marked "S. Osgood," stood on the lot, so the corner building had evidently been taken down or moved by then. The acre passed from Osgood's estate to Susan F. Hutchins in 1899, to George A. Osgood in 1909, to Edith G. Markus in 1926 and to Munro J. Pedley and Ida B. Kitchen in 1928; Mrs. Kitchen sold "202 Pollard Street" to private owners in 1963. The house remains, and the corner where the outbuilding stood is open yard.
