Lewis Johnson House (Governor Peabody Road)
The Lewis Johnson House was a small dwelling built about 1852 by Lewis Johnson, a ship carpenter from Boston, on two acres of back land behind the Gustus Homestead, on the southeast side of the Andover road east of Billerica Center. The 1853 Walling map of Billerica shows it as "M. Johnson", set well back from the road south of the M. Gustus farmhouse, and the 1856 county map shows a house in the same place. The site is now in the Governor Peabody Road neighborhood, laid out in 1968, behind 237 Andover Road.
The land was part of "the Lewis place so called", owned by Thomas Richardson at his death in 1828. In 1829 his heirs sold about sixty-nine acres on the southerly side of "the road that leads from Billerica meeting house to Salem" to the Rogers family, who sold them in 1835 to the innholder Henry Allen. The 1836 plan of the Boston and Lowell Railroad draws only a few houses along this road, all at the roadside, and nothing on the back land. In February 1850 Allen sold sixty acres "with all the buildings thereon" to J. Frederick Gustus, a native of Denmark, and the adjoining twelve acres to the southwest to Henry Sperry.
On May 6, 1850 Gustus gave "Lewis Johnson of said Boston Ship Carpenter" a bond to sell him two acres behind the farmhouse. Gustus died later that year, before giving a deed, and Johnson took the matter to the Supreme Judicial Court, which ordered the executor, James Munroe, and the widow, Mary H. Gustus, to convey. Their deed of November 17, 1851, for $150, "the balance due on said bond", describes a lot beginning 214 feet back from "the Turnpike leading from Billerica Meeting House to Salem", by "a division fence recently built" and a stone wall, "making two acres of land", reached by "a passage way on the westerly side of the house lately occupied by said Gustus", six feet wide and "always to be kept open". The deed names no buildings, and Johnson was not living in Billerica when the census was taken in September 1850, so the house was built in 1852 or early 1853, in time for the map.
On January 5, 1855 Lewis Johnson, now "of Billerica, Carpenter", and his wife Mary E. Johnson sold the two acres "with the buildings thereon" to Henry Sperry for $400, and on the same day bought from Sperry a bare acre fronting on the road, where he built again. Three days later Sperry sold the house lot for the same $400 to Mary H. Gustus, so it went back into the Gustus farm. The "M." on the maps may stand for Mary E. Johnson or may be an engraver's slip; no other Johnson owned land here. In 1866 Johnson sold his second house to Levi P. Felton, who resold it the next year to Mary H. Gustus, by then Mary H. Crosby, and in 1868 Johnson moved to the house now known as the Lewis Johnson House on Andover Road near the Center.
No later record mentions the back house. The 1875 Beers atlas shows Mrs. Crosby's buildings only at the road, so the house was gone by then, and 1875 is used here as the latest likely date of its removal. After her death about 1891 her heir Clara E. Sexton sold the farmhouse with four acres on the road to Joseph S. Holt in 1893, "a part of the Gustus homestead", and kept the land behind. The fifty acres there, "parts of the Custus Homestead, Richardson Lot, and Sperry Lot, so-called", with only fifteen feet on the road and no buildings named, went in 1902 to Katie E. Taylor, back to the Sextons in 1910, then to John E. V. Hayden and in 1915 to William V. Hayden. When the 1920 taxes went unpaid the Town took the land in 1922, and in 1930 the Collector released it to Abram C. Flint for ten dollars.
Flint sold the fifty acres in 1956 to Albert P. Rounds of Stoneham, who registered them in the Land Court in 1966. In 1968 the tract was laid out on a plan by George H. Poor with Governor Peabody, Governor Carver, Governor Hutchinson and Saltonstall Roads, the narrow strip to Andover Road becoming Governor Carver Road. Lot 1, at the corner of Governor Peabody and Governor Hutchinson Roads, about four hundred feet back from Andover Road and next to the rear of the 237 Andover Road land, received its house in 1969. The Johnson lot of 1851 lay across this line, behind the old farmhouse.

Thomas Richardson "has died within sixty days last past," his administrator wrote in October 1828. His son T. Richardson Jr. declined on Sept. 20, 1828 and joined the heirs in asking that Joseph Locke of Billerica be appointed, which the court at Chelmsford did on Oct. 7, 1828, on a $5,000 bond with Josiah Stevens of Billerica (Richardson's son-in-law, who had kept the tavern) and John French of Boston, merchant; Artemas and Lydia Rogers witnessed the bond. The file holds only the appointment papers and the notice to creditors; no inventory or division survives in it, and the heirs settled the real estate among themselves by deed (the tavern going to his daughters Lydia Rogers and Elizabeth Richardson).
