Melody Lane is a short street in Pinehurst running west from Boston Road toward the Shawsheen River, between Greenville Street and Pinegrove Avenue. Until the late 1980s it was, by all the evidence, Spring Street. The Lowell directory of 1931 lists "Spring (Pinehurst) from Boston rd to Shawsheen river," beside "Summer from Boston rd n Autumn to Shawsheen river," and a 1985 rezoning article for land on Boston Road "bordering the Shawsheen River" (Assessors' Plate 90) bounds it by a line "100 feet northerly of the northerly line of Spring Street." Spring, Summer and Autumn Streets, side by side west of Boston Road, were evidently named as a set for the seasons.
No recorded plan of these streets has been found. The oldest houses on Melody Lane are dated by the assessors to 1914 and 1915, and the street was in the directory by 1931; the neighboring Autumn Street and Pinegrove Avenue were accepted in 1928 and 1929, but the Pinehurst Spring Street does not appear in the town's list of accepted streets printed in 1956, and no later acceptance has been found.
The name Melody Lane first appears in 1990, in a high school yearbook address on the street. The change from Spring Street probably came in the town's program of 1988 to 1991 for removing duplicate and similar sounding street names, since Billerica had another Spring Street, the old road in South Billerica from Concord Road to the Bedford line, which became Springs Road at about the same time. The renaming vote has not been found, and no record explains the choice of Melody.
Melody Lane is not among the roads of the 1831 town map accepted by the town in 2016.
