Surveyor of Wood and Lumber

The Surveyors of Wood and Lumber (also recorded as Measurers of Wood and Lumber) were minor town officers chosen each year at the annual Town Meeting, usually under Article 2 of the warrant together with the fence viewers and field drivers. They were sworn by the Town Clerk and measured cordwood and lumber offered for sale so that buyers received honest measure. In the 1890s and 1900s the town chose nine to eleven of them, usually re-electing the whole list on a motion that the same surveyors as last year should serve; the list shrank to two by the 1950s.

From 1954 the meeting appointed rather than elected them, and by the 1980s the office was ceremonial: in 1988 and 1989 the Town Moderator made the appointments. The last holder found is Romolo Capobianco, whose term ran to April 1991; the office was listed as vacant in 1992 and as "None" in the 1998 and 1999 reports.
