Thomas Patten, called Sergeant Patten, was born on March 22, 1665/6, the eldest son of Thomas Patten (1636-1690), the owner of the saw mill on Content Brook, and his first wife, Rebecca Paine. Under his fathers will of 1690 he received, as eldest son, the second-division lot and its meadows. On December 21, 1699 he married Hannah Foster, a step-daughter of Peter Bracket.

When his brother Nathaniel Patten died in 1718, Thomas Patten and Thomas Ross were the sureties on the administration bond given by the widow, Hannah. For many years three men named Thomas Patten lived in Billerica at once, and the town records tell them apart: when his son died in 1733 the clerk wrote him down as "Thomas Ters," the third, and his nephew Thomas Patten, son of Deacon William, appears as Thomas Patten Jr.

Hannah died on August 18, 1742, aged 73 by Hazen and 75 by her gravestone. Sergeant Patten died on September 14, 1752, at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 27 days, and was buried in the Old South Cemetery. His children were Thomas (1701), who died before him; Nathaniel (1702/3); John (1705), who married Elizabeth Frost and was dismissed to the church in Shrewsbury in 1753; and Joseph (1710), who married Susanna Hill in 1734/5 and whose name disappears from the tax list in 1743.
