Trantanella/Boston Road Conservation Land

Trantanella/Boston Road Conservation Land
Address Boston Road
Built 2014

The Trantanella/Boston Road Conservation Land is a tract of about 17 acres of wooded swamp and upland in North Billerica, behind the houses on Boston Road between Chelmsford Road and Treble Cove Road. It has no buildings and no developed trails. The Conservation Commission describes it as "undeveloped forested wetlands and upland areas, with a large portion mapped as \"Estimated/Priority Habitat Area for rare & endangered species\"" by the state's Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program, and it adjoins on the south the town's McDonald Knowles Conservation Land, so that the two make one block of protected wetland and woods of more than seventy acres west of Boston Road.

The land is Lot B, "containing 17.06 Acres", of a "Compiled Plan of Land in Billerica, Massachusetts" drawn on October 9, 1970 by Emmons, Fleming and Bienvenue for Sture Lundstedt and Normand Rondeau (Plan Book 111, Plan 109); Lot A of the same plan is a smaller lot on Boston Road. Rondeau put Lot B into the RLC Realty Trust, which he held with Howard S. Chin of Concord, in 1973, and in June 1983 the trustees sold it for $79,000 to Tranti Systems, Inc., a company with its place of business at One Chelmsford Road. When the company was liquidated in 1999 it deeded the lot, "for consideration of $1.00 and a Plan of Liquidation", to its president and treasurer, Frank M. Trantanella.

The Conservation Department began working toward the acquisition in fiscal 2014 with the assessors and the Town Manager. In December 2014 Trantanella, then living in Naples, Florida, deeded Lot B to the town, "acting by and through its Conservation Commission, pursuant to the provisions of Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 40, Section 8C", for one dollar; the selectmen approved the gift on December 15 and the Commission accepted it "for conservation purposes" on December 17, and the deed was recorded on December 31, 2014. In its next annual report the Commission thanked "Mrs. Margaret Robbins and Mr. Frank Trantanella for their generous gifts of conservation land."
