Veterans' Agent

The Veterans' Agent directs the town's Department of Veterans' Services, which administers state and town veterans' benefits under Chapter 115 of the General Laws and acts as the town's Graves Registration Officer. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries state aid, military aid and soldiers' relief were handled by the selectmen and the Town Clerk (who made the state aid returns), with a selectman assigned to Soldiers' Relief.

The 1944 annual Town Meeting, on the proposal of American Legion Post 116, voted to establish a Veterans' Aid Bureau run by a war veteran appointed by the selectmen, to be known as the Veterans' Aid and Pension Agent. The first holder, Ralph K. Sandberg, served from 1945 and also signed as Director of Veterans' Services. Later reports use the titles Veterans' Agent and Director of Veterans' Services interchangeably; recent holders are styled Director/Agent.
