Kohlrausch House
| Address | 25-27 Colson St |
| MACRIS ID | BIL.240 |
| Built | 1886 |
The Kohlrausch House stands on a half-acre lot on the east side of Colson Street in North Billerica, on what the old deeds call "the old road leading from Billerica Centre to North Billerica". The land was once part of the homestead farm of Daniel Wilson, the canal-era carpenter known as "Boss" Wilson, who began assembling it in 1831 and built his own house at the corner of Elm and Colson Streets in 1848. After Wilson's death in 1861 his farm was sold at auction and passed through Gardner Parker and J. M. G. Parker to Charles P. Talbot and Thomas Talbot in 1883, and in 1884 to The Talbot Mills.
On November 24, 1885 The Talbot Mills sold the lot, "a portion of the Daniel Wilson homestead so called", to Carl H. Kohlrausch, who bought it under the name Charles H. Kohlrausch, for $200. The deed describes bare land: a stone bound on the road "about one hundred and eighty feet from the middle of a turn in said road towards the east", 120 feet of frontage and 181 feet 6 inches deep, with mill land on the other three sides. Those same bounds were repeated in every deed for the next century. The house, a Victorian two-family, was built about 1886 and appears on the 1887 map. (The Massachusetts inventory form cites the deed as Book 178 Page 192; it is recorded at Book 178 Page 102.)
Carl Kohlrausch died before 1901, when the Wilson house lot next door was described as bounded by "land of the Heirs of Charles H. Kohlrausch". His will left everything in trust for his widow Hannah D. Kohlrausch for her life and then to his four children. After his daughter Hannah A. Kohlrausch and then his widow had died, his son Charles H. Kohlrausch Jr., the only trustee still acting, passed the house "with the buildings thereon" through a straw conveyance to Frederic A. Fisher of Lowell, who deeded it on February 20, 1903 to the three sons, Charles H. Jr., Matthew H. Kohlrausch and John H. Kohlrausch. In September 1909 Matthew and John released their shares to Charles, who by then also owned the Wilson house lot to the north (bought from The Talbot Mills in 1901).
Charles H. Kohlrausch Jr., a town meeting moderator and school committee member (the Kohlrausch Playground in North Billerica was later given in his memory by his widow), had died by the end of 1916. His widow Lillian V. Kohlrausch, who inherited under his will, sold this house on December 28, 1916 to Martin J. Shalloo of Billerica, and sold the Wilson house a month later to Neil R. Mahoney. Shalloo financed the purchase with a $3,000 mortgage from the Lowell Co-operative Bank. In 1935 he passed the title through a straw, Ruth Buxton of Chelmsford, so that he and his wife Agnes T. Shalloo held it together as tenants by the entirety. A 1936 Talbot Mills subdivision plan marks the lot "Shalloo" on Colson Street, and a 1954 mortgage is the first record in the chain to call the road Colson Street.
Martin J. Shalloo died before 1966, when the state certified that the house had passed to Agnes as surviving joint owner. After her death it went through her estate to Loren J. Shalloo, and in August 1979, under his will, the house was sold out of the family for $40,000, ending 63 years of Shalloo ownership. The 1980 inventory form recorded simply that "Kohlrausch lived here. Shalloos lived here." The house was sold again in 1986 for $169,900 and has since remained with the same family. It is a contributing building in the North Billerica National Register district (1983) and the local historic district (1992).

Later Talbot Mills deeds cite it with Book 169 Page 468 as the deeds "from the Talbot heirs" to the new corporation (one recites a deed of Thomas Talbot et als. dated Oct. 15, 1884). The registry shows "Image is Unavailable" for Book 169, so the deed itself was not read; that it covered the land of the future Oval, part of the C. P.
