Salter Block
Salter Block
| Also Known As | Talbot Woolen Mills Worker Housing |
| Address | 7-9 Millstone Wy |
| MACRIS ID | BIL.273 |
| Built | 1863 |
| Demolished | 2021 |
The Salter Block was a multi-family tenement behind the Salter house on the east bank of the Concord River in North Billerica, later numbered 4-6 and then 7-8-9 Rogers Court and 7-9 Millstone Way. It stood on part of the land called "The Acre" until 2021.
The carpenter Joseph J. Salter moved across the river after selling his Wilson Street lot to C. P. Talbot in 1850, and he appears on the 1853 map beside the road from Billerica Mills to the center of town (now Rogers Street). No deed to him for this land was recorded. In the winter of 1862-63 Salter and the Talbots exchanged land for the same price, $900. The Talbots gave him ten acres on the Fordway road, and Salter sold Charles P. Talbot and Thomas Talbot the land behind his house "with the buildings on the same," running from the road back to "the mill pond or river." The building already standing there in 1863 is probably the block that kept Salter's name. MACRIS dates it to about 1865 and notes that it is on the 1875 map but not the 1853 map. After Salter died in 1869 his widow Hannah released the same parcel to the Talbots, and in 1870 she sold them the house lot in front.
The block was company housing for the Talbot woolen mills, first under C. P. Talbot and Co. and from 1884 under Talbot Mills. On the mill's Plan C-2 of October 1936 (Plan Book 60, Plan 46) it is Lot 77, 11,718 square feet behind the Salter house (Lot 76), reached by a right of way along Lot 75. On October 19, 1939 the Talbot Mills sold Lots 76 and 77, with two Wilson Street lots, to Joseph and Fannie Sidorovich of Maynard. In June 1946 they sold the block to John P. McCauley, who financed it with a G. I. loan.
Private owners held the block after that, and from 1981 the same family owned both the Salter house and the block. In 1989 the block was placed in the Rogers Court Realty Trust, and in 2014 it passed to a family trust. In 2018 the trust sold the house and the block together for $525,000 to 27 Rogers Street LLC, which conveyed them in 2020 to 1 Millstone Way, LLC. The lots were combined with Lot 75 as 25 Rogers Street, and the old buildings were razed in 2021 for the Millstone Village townhouses.
