The Morey Block at 8 Andover Road is a long, low commercial building on the north side of Andover Road just east of the corner of Boston Road in Billerica Centre. It was built in 1914-15 by F. G. Morey & Co., the coal, grain and hay business of Francis Gilbert Morey and his son-in-law Herbert F. Jacobs. Although MACRIS lists it under the name of Frederic A. Morey, who kept the general store on the west side of the Common, Frederick died in 1902; the buyer of the lot in 1914 was his twin brother, recorded in the deeds as Francis G. Morey.
The land was part of the old Danforth homestead north of the Common, which passed through the Osgood, Pollard, Abbot, Parker and Richardson families to the Baldwins' store lot, then to Dr. Thaddeus Brown (1832), Dr. Zadok Howe (1841) and, in 1855, Luther W. Faulkner (see Luther W. Faulkner House). In 1914 his son Richard Faulkner cut the homestead into lots along a new 12-foot passageway. Lot 4, the easternmost, went to Francis G. Morey and Herbert F. Jacobs on July 1, 1914 and again, on a revised plan, on August 14, 1914: "the land in said Billerica situated on the northerly side of Andover street", 50.74 feet on the street and 164.54 feet deep, about 7,999 square feet, bounded north by land of Thomas Talbot and others, trustees (later the First Parish), and east by the Blodgett heirs. Neither deed mentions any building, which supports the MACRIS date of 1914-15 rather than the 1877 date once given for the block. The Billerica Historical Commission recorded in 1983 that the eastern strip already held a two-bay carriage shed, which the Faulkners had moved from the hotel site across Andover Road after the hotel burned in 1876, and an attached barn, and that Morey added a front part facing the street, probably moved in from nearby. The carriage shed later served as a blacksmith shop.
Morey had sold coal, grain, feed, cement and fertilizer to the town for years, and the town reports of 1910-1913 are full of payments to "F. G. Morey". The firm mortgaged the lot to the Lowell Trust Company in 1922, and by the end of the 1920s the bank was paying its taxes. When the 1931 taxes of $102.30 went unpaid, the tax collector Patrick J. Mahoney offered the property at auction on September 25, 1933 and, with no bidder, took for the Town "7999 square feet of land more or less with buildings thereon situated on Andover street known as Faulkner Land". In October 1933 Morey, by then a widower, and Jacobs quitclaimed the lot "with the buildings thereon" to the Lowell Trust Company, but in 1938 the Land Court entered a decree "forever foreclosing and barring all rights of redemption" under the Town's tax title. Leroy O. Balch later moved his grocery from the former Morey store on Concord Road into this building.
On September 15, 1939 the Town Treasurer sold the property to Alden M. Rollins, and in the following years the long building was divided by partitions among three owners. Rollins sold the north end, about 2,712 square feet "with the buildings thereon", to Charles H. Wilson in 1940, cutting the line through the building "at a point equally distant between two partitions", and added a 13-foot strip in 1946. In August 1946 he sold the next 21-foot strip to John J. and Olive M. Faria, and in June 1948 the store end on the street, 3,307 square feet, to David E. Gardner of Lowell, whose surveyor R. M. Jacobs drew the plan of the divided lot (Plan Book 73, Plan 21). The Selectmen confirmed Rollins's 1939 title the same day. After Wilson's death his administrator sold the north part in 1952, and it reached Gardner two months later. Gardner sold the combined property in 1954 with a restriction against selling "groceries or meats" there until 1963. It passed in January 1955 to Town Investments, Inc., which bought the Faria strip in 1965 and so reunited the whole of the 1914 lot.
Town Investments, Inc. owned the block until December 1986, when the property went to private owners. They sold it in 2017 for $415,000 to Billerica Realty, LLC, the present owner. The building, now sided and much altered, holds a barber shop and other small businesses, and stands in the Billerica Centre local historic district designated in 1990.

| 1711 | Administration and Division | Estate of Ensign Jonathan Danforth Jr. of Billerica (intestate) | Rebecca Danforth, widow; Thomas Danforth, eldest son; the other children | Danforth homestead, 1711 probate | Probate #5890 |
Rebecca and her son Thomas were made administrators on Mar. 12, 1710/11. The inventory of Mar. 7, 1710/11 begins with "the homestead or house lott containing 20 acres with the buildings upon it," 100 pounds. The division of Dec. 7, 1711 gave the widow for her thirds "The Westerly end of the house and one third part of the barn," six and a half acres of plowland and meadow on the Country Road and four acres of pasture at the north end of the homestead, with "a way left of a pole and half wide through the widow's land from the Country Road to the east end of the house"; the rest of the house and homestead went to the eldest son Thomas, who paid the other heirs (receipts 1712-1724 from Thomas and Rebekah Parker, Sarah, Jacob and John Danforth). In June 1754, the widow being dead, commissioners valued her third, including "the west end of an old House" and "one third part of an old Barn," and since the lands "lies enter mixt with the lands of the two thirds" recommended it go to Thomas's heirs; on Feb. 10, 1755 the judge assigned it to Thomas and Elijah Danforth, "children of Thomas Danforth, who was eldest son of Jonathan Danforth." After her death his son Thomas was made administrator (Feb. 5, 1759, with the innholder David Osgood a surety). The committee of Mar. 28, 1759 valued "Twenty acres of land which is the Homestead, bounded Westwardly by the Country Road, Southwardly by Sheldon's lane (so called), Eastwardly partly by Samuel Sheldon's land and partly by Ebenezer French's land, Northwardly partly by Thomas Kidder's land and David Osgood and partly by William Baldwin's land ... near the Center of the Town" at 152 pounds and "the Dwelling House and Barn belonging to and standing on the abovesaid lot" at 60 pounds, and, finding "the above said Homestead is not convenient for to make two settlements," settled "the whole lands and buildings upon the Eldest Son," Thomas, who paid his brother Elijah. Accepted Jan. 7, 1760. Papers read, pages 2-13.

William Richardson, husband of Joseph Danforth's daughter Sally (Sarah), died in June 1826; his widow declined administration and Marshall Preston was appointed June 27, 1826. The inventory (Joseph Blanchard, Josiah Stevens, Ichabod Everett) shows a stage and livery business: ten horses, four stage harnesses, an old stage coach, a covered wagon, a blacksmith shop and a hop house. Debts of more than $20,000 made the estate insolvent, and on Feb. 13, 1827 the administrator was licensed to sell the real estate. The widow's dower (return of April 3, 1827) was a fifteen-acre lot east of the Shawshin and a pew; no dwelling house is named, since the family lived on Danforth land.
