Queensland Spa
This page is about the building. For the business, see Queensland Spa.
The building at 3 Riveredge Road, at the corner of Maybury Road in Queensland, was probably the home of the Queensland Spa, a small restaurant and refreshment stand listed in the 1957 Lowell suburban directory as "Queensland Spa (Anthony Mastrullo) River Edge rd Queensland", among the town's restaurants. It stands on the greater parts of lots 1, 2 and 3 of Block H on the "Plan of Queensland on the Concord", the summer colony laid out along the Concord River in 1928.
The land was part of the farm that Lucy H. Foster, a widow, left in 1869 to her nephews Henry Benjamin and Edward Hill Judkins, surveyed in 1871 as 238.8, 203.27 and 61.6 acres along the Triple Cove and Western Roads. The Judkins farm, 503.67 acres "with the buildings thereon" in Billerica and Carlisle reaching from the Triple Cove Road to Winning's Pond, Page's Brook and the river, was sold by Richard H. and Belva C. Judkins of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in August 1926; Belva Rd and Judkins Rd in Queensland recall the family. After passing through Philip F. Coleman and Elsa V. Johnson, the riverside part, 258.8 acres beginning "at the junction of Concord River and the Chelmsford Road", was bought on July 31, 1928 by Edgar C. Linn of Brookline, who gave back a $22,500 mortgage. In December 1928 R. F. Smith drew Plan #1 of Queensland for The Linn Realty Service, Inc., with Riveredge Rd running from the Chelmsford Road, now Nashua Rd, along the river. Unsold lots passed in 1932 to Linn's Flexi Realty Trust and in 1942 to his Concord River Realty Trust, whose list included "Lots numbered 1 to 6 inclusive, 33 and 34, Block H".
In December 1944 the trust sold lots 1 to 6 of Block H, 152.4 feet on Riveredge Road and about 15,000 square feet, to Albert C. Bates of Boston as "the land". On July 27, 1946 Bates sold the same vacant lots to Carmela Anne McDonald and Angelina C. Mastrullo of 122 Hamilton Street, Cambridge. At the Special Town Meeting of October 28, 1946 the town voted, on the petition of Angelina Mastrullo, to rezone her land on Riveredge Road from residence to business, and when Carmela McDonald quitclaimed her half to Anthony Mastrullo and Angelina C. Mastrullo on December 30, 1946 the lots carried "the land with the buildings thereon". Anthony Mastrullo, listed in 1949 as a builder living on River Edge Road, mortgaged lots 1 to 3 to the Lowell Co-operative Bank in 1947, 1948 and 1950 and to Middlesex Coal and Grain, Inc. of Bedford in 1950, and sold lots 4 to 6 in 1950. The new business building at the corner of Maybury Road was the only Riveredge Road property the family owned in 1957, when the directory named the spa.
The identification is not certain. On June 10, 1958 Anthony and Angelina Mastrullo also bought lots 1 to 11 of Block A, the corner of Chelmsford Road and Riveredge Road down to the river, which had held buildings since at least 1942, and Angelina's estate sold that land "with the buildings thereon" to Joseph Casello for $58,000 in 1965. Its 1978 division shows a garage and two one-story frame buildings, one of which became the Spinning Wheel and later the Riverview Restaurant at 263 Nashua Rd; the spa may have moved there after 1958.
A plan of May 22, 1958 by Merrill A. Brown cut a narrow strip, Lot A, from the back of the Maybury Road side for a family member. Anthony Mastrullo died before August 1964, when the state certified that the "land and buildings" had passed to Angelina as surviving joint owner. After her death the property was divided among her heirs, and in 1965 the estate of Francis A. Mastrullo and the other heirs, among them Carmela A. McDonald, conveyed their thirds to one member of the family. It stayed with the family, from 1982 in a family realty trust, until 1995; since 2004 it has been owned by a limited liability company. The building, which the assessor dates to about 1940 although the deeds show it was built in 1946, is now a four-unit apartment house.
