John Baldwin (born 1699) was a son of Ensign Thomas Baldwin and his wife Sarah, and a grandson of the settler John Baldwin. He was born in Billerica on November 10, 1699. The town records call him John Baldwin Jr., to tell him from his uncle John Baldwin, and he is "John Baldwin Jun." in the tax list of 1733. On May 4, 1726 he married Sarah Hill, a daughter of Samuel Hill.
Of their eight children only two lived to grow up: Katharine (1727), who married Nathaniel Cumings in 1749, and John (1731). Sarah (1729), Jonas (1734), Martha (1736), Joseph (1739), Jeremiah (1741/2) and Tamer (1743) all died within a few weeks or months of birth.
Samuel Hill died early in 1762 and left his real estate, after his widow's life, to his five daughters and a granddaughter. When his homestead of thirty-one acres on the Concord River was divided on May 3, 1762, Sarah Baldwin's share was eleven acres on its south-west side, running from a heap of stones by Peter Hill's land to a marked red oak by the river. The same day John and Sarah Baldwin sold the eleven acres for 104 pounds to Samuel Kidder, whose wife Abiel, Samuel Hill's granddaughter, had received the house and barn; Sarah signed with her mark. They acknowledged the deed on April 4, 1764, the last record of him found. Hazen suggests that he married Elizabeth Parkhurst of Chelmsford in 1758, but that was the marriage of his son John, and Sarah was still his wife in 1762.
