The Luther W. Faulkner House, also called the Dr. Thaddeus Brown House, is the Federal-style house at the corner of Boston Road and Andover Road in Billerica Centre, facing the Billerica Common. Its address was 414 Boston Road until 2013, when the town renumbered it 2 Andover Road. It is part of the Billerica Common and Square National Register district (1973) and the local historic district (1990).
The corner was once part of the Jonathan Danforth homestead north of the Common, which passed through Thomas Danforth (1737) to the innholder David Osgood (1760) and the tanner Solomon Pollard (1768). In 1793 Pollard sold the trader James Abbott an acre "at the Mouth of Sheldon's lane", the old name of Andover Road. Abbot kept a store on the corner. In 1805 he sold the store lot, "about eleven and a half square rods of ground with the buildings thereon", to John Phillips of Andover, and it changed hands among traders (the Parkers of Andover, then Joseph Bradley, 1810) until Joseph Parker gathered the whole corner acre between 1811 and 1814. In 1815 Parker sold the acre to William Richardson, who mortgaged it to his brother Asa Richardson of Boston. William died insolvent in 1826. Asa sold the northern part to Marshall Preston in 1827 and in 1828 sold the corner third of an acre, "with the store and all the other buildings", to John Baldwin and Henry Baldwin.
On October 4, 1832 the Baldwins sold the corner lot "near the meeting house", bounded by the road from Boston to Lowell and "the road leading from said meeting house to Salem", to Dr. Thaddeus Brown for $1,166. Days earlier Preston had added a 20-foot strip from the south side of his homestead. A month later, on November 1, 1832, Brown married Susannah Crosby, daughter of Josiah Crosby, and the house was built on the corner about 1833. Brown, a graduate of Yale (1826) and Harvard Medical College (1830), practiced here until his death on September 28, 1839, aged 37. His will left everything except some bank stock to his widow. In 1841 she sold "the late Mansion House of Doct. Thaddeus Brown", with its stable and outbuildings, to Dr. Zadok Howe for $3,500.
Dr. Howe, Billerica's long-time physician, lived here until his death in 1851. His will left the residue of his estate in trust to found the Howe School. In 1853 the school's trustees sold "the late residence and estate of Zadok Howe" for $3,000 to the traders John Baldwin Jr. and Albert Marshall, which is why the 1853 map of Billerica marks the house "M. Baldwin". In 1855 Baldwin and Marshall sold it for $3,075 to Luther W. Faulkner, son of Francis Faulkner of the Faulkner Mills and a Lowell mill owner. Faulkner made it his home for half a century. In 1873 he bought a one-rod strip on the north from William Blanchard, and Hazen's 1883 history shows the house as the "Residence of Luther W. Faulkner". He died about 1904-1905. His will left the house in trust for his son Richard. After the death of his widow, Martha M. Faulkner, the trustees deeded the homestead to Richard Faulkner in 1911.
Richard Faulkner divided the homestead in 1914-1917 on plans by F. W. Huntington and by Smith & Brooks (Plan Book 31, Plans 42 and 74; Plan Book 32, Plan 28). Lot 2 on Boston Road went to Thomas F. Lyons, who built the Thomas F. Lyons Building there. The back land went to Francis G. Morey and Herbert F. Jacobs, and Lot 1 went to the McElligotts. The house itself, Lot A of 6,350 square feet, was sold in 1915 to Samuel and Celia Jacobs of Concord. Its rear ell, on Lot B, was sold in 1917 to Delia A. Verner. In 1918 the Jacobses sold the house to Harry and Anna Gertrude Waitz. In 1932 the Waitzes bought Lot B from Verner's estate, which put the house and its ell back on one lot. Harry Waitz ran his tailor's shop from the house, and MACRIS recorded him as owner in 1973. The Waitz family kept the property until 2000. Since 2012 it has been owned by a realty trust and used as an oral surgery office.
Earlier accounts call Luther W. Faulkner the first owner, describe Dr. Howe as Dr. Brown's partner who carried on in the house, and name a trustee "Marshall Baldwin". The deeds show that Dr. Brown built the house. Dr. Howe bought it from Brown's widow in 1841. "M. Baldwin" on the 1853 map stands for the firm of Albert Marshall and John Baldwin Jr., and Faulkner did not buy the house until 1855.

| 1711 | Administration and Division | Estate of Ensign Jonathan Danforth Jr. of Billerica (intestate) | Rebecca Danforth, widow; Thomas Danforth, eldest son; the other children | 1711 Danforth estate: house lot including this corner | Probate #5890 |
Rebecca and her son Thomas were made administrators on Mar. 12, 1710/11. The inventory of Mar. 7, 1710/11 begins with "the homestead or house lott containing 20 acres with the buildings upon it," 100 pounds. The division of Dec. 7, 1711 gave the widow for her thirds "The Westerly end of the house and one third part of the barn," six and a half acres of plowland and meadow on the Country Road and four acres of pasture at the north end of the homestead, with "a way left of a pole and half wide through the widow's land from the Country Road to the east end of the house"; the rest of the house and homestead went to the eldest son Thomas, who paid the other heirs (receipts 1712-1724 from Thomas and Rebekah Parker, Sarah, Jacob and John Danforth). In June 1754, the widow being dead, commissioners valued her third, including "the west end of an old House" and "one third part of an old Barn," and since the lands "lies enter mixt with the lands of the two thirds" recommended it go to Thomas's heirs; on Feb. 10, 1755 the judge assigned it to Thomas and Elijah Danforth, "children of Thomas Danforth, who was eldest son of Jonathan Danforth." After her death his son Thomas was made administrator (Feb. 5, 1759, with the innholder David Osgood a surety). The committee of Mar. 28, 1759 valued "Twenty acres of land which is the Homestead, bounded Westwardly by the Country Road, Southwardly by Sheldon's lane (so called), Eastwardly partly by Samuel Sheldon's land and partly by Ebenezer French's land, Northwardly partly by Thomas Kidder's land and David Osgood and partly by William Baldwin's land ... near the Center of the Town" at 152 pounds and "the Dwelling House and Barn belonging to and standing on the abovesaid lot" at 60 pounds, and, finding "the above said Homestead is not convenient for to make two settlements," settled "the whole lands and buildings upon the Eldest Son," Thomas, who paid his brother Elijah. Accepted Jan. 7, 1760. Papers read, pages 2-13.

William Richardson, husband of Joseph Danforth's daughter Sally (Sarah), died in June 1826; his widow declined administration and Marshall Preston was appointed June 27, 1826. The inventory (Joseph Blanchard, Josiah Stevens, Ichabod Everett) shows a stage and livery business: ten horses, four stage harnesses, an old stage coach, a covered wagon, a blacksmith shop and a hop house. Debts of more than $20,000 made the estate insolvent, and on Feb. 13, 1827 the administrator was licensed to sell the real estate. The widow's dower (return of April 3, 1827) was a fifteen-acre lot east of the Shawshin and a pew; no dwelling house is named, since the family lived on Danforth land.
