Dolan's Store (1910 - 1950)
Turnpike Market (1950 - ????) |
|
This store building stands on the southwesterly side of the Middlesex Turnpike at the shore of Nuttings Lake, across the turnpike from the corner of Lake Street where Perry's Store and later the Turnpike Spa and the Nuttings Lake Cafe stood. For a quarter century it was the Turnpike Market of Edward L. MacLennan.
The lot was part of the forty-acre homestead on the west side of the turnpike at Nutting's Pond that had been the farm of Charles Stearns House and later of Peter Dolan. In 1910 the homestead "with all the buildings thereon" passed to Peter's widow Johanna and their son Francis J. Dolan, who ran the dance hall and later the roller rink at the corner of Water Street next door. After Francis died in January 1942 his heirs conveyed his real estate to his widow, Alice M. Dolan. The assessor dates the store building to about 1910. It was first known as Dolan's Store, the Dolan family's store at the corner, before Ed MacLennan took it over as the Turnpike Market.
Ed MacLennan's Turnpike Market was advertising by 1950. In December 1952 Alice M. Dolan sold Edward L. and Edna M. MacLennan "the land ... with the buildings thereon" on the southwesterly side of the turnpike, a lot of about 10,000 square feet running 186 feet along the turnpike to Nuttings Pond and 169 feet along the pond, as drawn on a plan made for MacLennan in November 1952 (Plan Book 82, Plan 93B). The 1951 Polk directory lists "Turnpike Market (Edw L MacLennan)" on the turnpike, with the Turnpike Spa of George A. Colbath, a separate store across the road, on the next line, and the 1957 directory still has MacLennan's market there. As Turnpike Markets, Inc., the store sold liquor, groceries, meats, frozen foods and subs and advertised in the high school yearbooks into the 1970s.
In March 1984 Edward L. MacLennan sold the store lot and the former roller-rink lot beside it to a member of his family for $80,000. The property went to a family trust in 2007, and in 2014 the trust sold it for $450,000 to the present owner, which still holds it with the rink lot. The assessor still records the building as a store.
