On September 9, 1659, the Town Meeting agreed to construct a building 30 feet by 24 feet. The building stood south of the Common, with its length laid east-west. It's likely that it was where the Cummings St triangle is now, some distance from where the plaque is. While the town's inhabitants certainly rendered time and materials, John Parker was the principal builder, and he was paid with land.
In 1680, the building was shingled and a larger gallery was added. In 1693, the town decided to build a new meetinghouse, but kept this building to store ammunition until 1708 under the command of Captain Danforth.
