The building of the third meeting-house occurred during Mr. Samuel Ruggles' pastorate. The vote to build was passed, September 15, 1737, and a building committee was appointed in November, consisting of Deacon Samuel Hill, Benjamin Tompson, Esq., Joshua Abbott, Ensign Benjamin Shed, and Sergeant Benjamin Frost. Timber was to be made ready for building the next summer. The size of the house was to be 60X40, and 26 feet "between joynts." It was to be thirty feet north of the former house, and must have stood near the present Soldiers' Monument. The raising took place, May 24, 1738.

In 1797, the citizens wanted to separate Church and State, so this combination building was deconstructed. The materials were used to construct the Town House east of the Common.
