| Built | 1890 |
| Other Lot Structures | Mahoney House (Built 1872) |
The house at 24-26 Wilson Street in North Billerica is the old Eliza Mahoney house, not a company-built tenement. In 1872 Anthony Jones and Dudley Foster sold Mrs. Mahoney four rods of the former Joel Dix homestead on the river side of Wilson Street "for the purpose of erecting a dwelling house", and she added narrow strips on the north in 1875 and 1881. Her house appears on the 1875 and 1889 maps as "Mrs. E. Mahoney". In August 1905 she sold the land "with the buildings thereon" to The Talbot Mills, and her neighbor Lawrence B. Gannon quitclaimed the boundary lines the same week. The full story of the lot before 1905 is told on the Mahoney House page.
For the next thirty-four years the house was one of the company's rented tenements. When The Talbot Mills had its village surveyed by J. C. and W. T. Monahan (Plan "A", 1926-27-36, Plan Book 60 Plan 25), the house lot became Lot 6, 44.05 feet on Wilson Street and 11,897 square feet, running back toward the Concord River; Mrs. Mahoney's smaller second building became Lot 7 (28 Wilson Street). On October 23, 1939, as the company sold off its houses, it deeded Lot 6 to Thomas J. and Mary J. Murphy of Chelmsford, keeping "the common sewer and all connections thereto running through or under the granted premises".
The registry's grantor indexes show how quickly the house then changed hands. The Murphys sold it in March 1946 to Charles E. Baker, Jr. and his wife; the Bakers sold it in June 1947 to Louis A. and Ida V. Ingraham; and in August 1948 the Ingrahams sold it to Raymond R. and Ruth M. Jarret, who borrowed from The Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank. The bank took possession in March 1950, obtained Land Court orders of notice that summer, and foreclosed in December 1950. Because the loan was guaranteed under the Servicemen's Readjustment Act, the bank passed the house in March 1951 to the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs, who resold it that June to a Lowell couple.
The same thing happened a generation later. The 1951 buyers sold in 1967 to a Cambridge couple, whose mortgage to the Essex Broadway Savings Bank of Lawrence was foreclosed in April 1970; the bank again deeded the house to the Veterans Administration, which sold it in October 1970 for $20,000 to the family then living at "24-26 Wilson Street", taking back an $18,500 mortgage. Private owners have held it since, with sales in 1976 and 1977, a brief ownership by the Chestnut Realty Trust (1977-1979), and family transfers in 1983, 1991 and 2007. It is now a three-family house on 0.273 acres.
The assessor's date of "about 1905" and the earlier date of 1890 both reflect the year the mill company bought the house, not the year it was built: the house was put up by Eliza Mahoney between 1872 and 1875. Deeds written from 1977 on also misdate the Talbot Mills deed to the Murphys as 1929; it was signed and recorded in 1939.
