Theophilus Manning Jr. (born 1821) was a Billerica farmer who owned half of the Winning Farm on Treble Cove Road from 1849 to 1864. He was born on April 11, 1821, the eldest son of Theophilus Manning and his second wife Polly Patten. He married Hannah, and their son Walter Theophilus was born in November 1847, when the town register called the father a farmer.
On March 19, 1849 he bought from Frederick Parker of Lowell for $1,073.70 an undivided half of the two tracts "composing the homestead farm of the late Nathan Abbot deceased", the old Winning farm, and became joint owner with Samuel Shed Jr. In 1851 the two had Cyrus Thompson survey the farm and divided it, the line running "through the middle" of the house from the road front to the back, "through the centre of the well" and "through the centre of a large Elm Tree", with the front entry and stairs in common; Manning took the southerly half of the house, the westerly half of the barn and about seventy-five acres. A new division in 1854 kept the line through the house and gave him the sole use of the first-floor bedroom and the lots south of the road reaching to Winning Pond. The census of 1850 lists him as a farmer of twenty-eight with real estate worth $2,000.
On June 18, 1864, with his wife Hannah releasing dower and homestead, he sold his half of the farm, about seventy-five acres with his half of the house, to Orrin Bragdon of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, for $967.35. When his father died in 1868 he was living in Chelmsford, and he is named there among the heirs in his mother's petition to prove the will in 1869.
