Charles G. Fletcher
Charles G. Fletcher
Charles G. Fletcher was a yeoman of Carlisle who kept the tavern at Billerica Centre for seven months in 1853, long enough for the map of that year to label it "C. Fletcher's Hotel" (the Fletcher Hotel). His wife was Hannah P. Fletcher, who released her dower in his sales.
On February 8, 1853 Fletcher bought from the innholder Artemas Hill, for $3,500, the one-acre "Tavern Stand" on the east side of the great road from Lowell to Boston, in front of the First Congregational meeting house, at the corner of Sheldon's Lane (now Andover Road), and became an innholder himself. On September 14 he sold it for $3,300 to Aaron R. Foster of Westford, who deeded it back twelve days later. On September 26 he and William Hardy traded places: Fletcher sold the tavern to Hardy for $3,500, taking a $1,000 mortgage back, and bought Hardy's own house and half acre farther south on the Boston road, the Nathaniel Davidson House, for $2,500, under Hardy's condition that no public house, hotel, tavern or inn should ever be kept there.
Fletcher did not stay in the Hardy house either. On November 3, 1853 he sold it for $2,300 to John F. Baldwin, in exchange for Baldwin's "gray place" on the road to Wilmington, and two days later he paid George W. Randall of Malden $300, and took over a $400 mortgage to Dr. Amariah Preston, for a small house and shop on the common, the Jackson Wright House. By March 1856 he was again living in Carlisle, now a trader, when he sold the house and shop to Alden B. Richardson for $800.
