Asa Hill Jr.
Asa Hill Jr. was born in Billerica on February 15, 1824, the eldest child of Capt. Asa Hill and his wife Susan, and grew up in his father's brick house on what is now West Street. He married Dorothy G., who was born in New Hampshire; in the census of 1850 he was a farmer of 27 with real estate of $6,000, and they had two children, Asa and Ellen.
On April 3, 1850 he bought from Joseph Manning and Ebenezer Cowdrey, the assignees of the insolvent Jacob Spaulding, about fifty-nine acres in three parcels on the old road to Chelmsford, now Sullivan Road, and the Rangeway, fifteen acres of them "with the buildings thereon," for $2,240, mortgaging them the same day to Benjamin Searles of Nashua and Abel Hunt of Concord. He is the "A. Hill, Jr." of the 1853 map (see Asa Hill Jr. House). On January 26, 1855 he and Dorothy sold the farm to George Miller of Lowell for $3,500. In 1857, then of Chelmsford, he lent Daniel Hartford $335 on a mortgage of seven acres on the New Road, discharged the next year.
In April 1862 his father conveyed him the family farm of 99 acres in Billerica and Carlisle with the brick house, and he gave back a mortgage of $1,500 and took over his father's 1861 mortgage to Lyman Haynes, Anthony Jones and Dudley Foster. His affairs did not prosper. On May 19, 1868 he reconveyed the farm to his father, then of Harvard, and on May 25 he was declared a bankrupt; the Register in Bankruptcy assigned his estate to William F. Anderson of Lowell. In May 1869 Dorothy released her dower in the farm so that his father could sell it.
