This was the old Bowers homestead, about fourteen acres on the east side of the county road, bounded east and north by David Abbott and south by the Bowers family's other land. On May 23, 1788, Capt. William Bowers gave it to his son Samuel as "the Homestead where he now lives ... with all the buildings thereon", so a house stood here by 1788. Samuel Bowers, "advanced in years and infirm of body", put all his property in trust with his son-in-law Dr. Abraham R. Thompson of Charlestown in 1825. On Oct. 1, 1830, Thompson sold "the homestead place of the late Samuel Bowers" to Nathaniel Cheever, blacksmith, for $900, "with the buildings thereon". Cheever sold one acre on the north to Josiah Richardson in 1853. On April 2, 1857, he and his wife Lucy sold the remaining thirteen acres to Jacob P. Brown, a Lowell pattern maker, for $1,900, calling it "the homestead of us ... which we now occupy". Brown sold it to Abel Patten in 1858. After Patten's death his executors auctioned "the Cheever Place" to Moses C. Trask in 1864, and Trask sold it to William H. Fuller that October. The Fullers kept it until 1917, when their son Walter H. Fuller sold it, through Bertram S. Ward, to Clarence A. Backer. Backer's executors sold it to Isabel Porter in 1926. The Shannons of Woburn, who held Porter's mortgage, foreclosed in 1934 and sold the land "with the buildings thereon" to John Thomas Musgrave in 1939. It was part of Musgrave's Tower Farm until the Farmers bought the farm in 1970 and sold the land for the mall in 1974.
