One of ten single-room district schoolhouses in Billerica during the 19th century, the Fordway School served as the District Number 4 Schoolhouse. In the 1870s, it was replaced with a stone building, and in the early 1890s, the school added a second story to accommodate a total of four classrooms. Around this time, it was renamed the Talbot School. In 1902, the "New" Talbot School was built, and this building was converted to apartments. In 1935, a fire destroyed the building.
It's rumored that the original wooden Fordway Schoolhouse was moved up the road in 1875 to become the Lawrence B. Gannon Store.
