Billerica Highlands

Billerica Highlands was a development of house lots in East Billerica on both sides of Baldwin Road near its junction with Salem Road. The plan, "Billerica Highlands, Billerica, Mass., owned by Billerica Realty Trust Co.," was surveyed and drawn by R. W. Seamans, engineer, of Providence, Rhode Island, in October 1913 and recorded on May 22, 1914 (Plan Book 31, Plan 67).

It divided the land into narrow house lots, mostly of about 2,400 square feet, on a grid of new streets: Prospect, Lincoln, Garden, Highland and Spaulding Roads and Birch Road on one side of Baldwin Road, and Camp, Oak and Park Roads and Henry, Joel and Albert Avenues on the other, running down toward Salem Road.

Little of the plan was built as drawn. Only Prospect Road survives, as Prospector Road: it became Prospector Road in the renaming of duplicate street names that began in 1988, the registry showing the new name by December 1990. The rest of the ground was built over in the 1960s and later with Silverbirch Road, Carline Drive, Kimbrough Road, Passaconaway Drive and Comanche Circle.

Two later subdivisions filled in the old Highlands ground. Green Acre Farms, laid out for Ponderosa Builders, Inc. of Burlington on a plan by the K. J. Miller Co. of May 7, 1964 (Plan Book 100, Plan 103), put 34 lots on Carline Drive, Green Acre Drive and Lantern Lane between Baldwin Road, Salem Road and the Roberts Homes land of Castlewood East; its houses date from about 1964 to 1967. Flintlock Acres, a subdivision of about 70 lots of some 50,000 square feet for Roper Homes Co., Inc. of Andover, was drawn by Robert M. Gill and Associates on August 4, 1981 and recorded on April 29, 1982 (Plan Book 136, Plan 59). It laid out Passaconaway Drive, Comanche Circle and Shawnee Circle from Baldwin Road, carried Chatham Road east from Castlewood East to meet Passaconaway Drive, and added Abanaki Drive toward the Shawsheen River. Its streets carry Native American names, and nearly all its houses were built between 1982 and 1985.
