Noah Harrod
Noah Harrod was a cabinet maker who lived and worked for nearly twenty years at the Corner in Billerica, in the house beside the Richardson tavern that was long called "the Noah Harrod place", the Samuel Parker House at 16 Salem Road. Where he came from is not recorded. On June 19, 1816, as a cabinet maker of Billerica, he paid William Richardson $750 for a quarter acre "with all the buildings thereon ... near Thomas Richardson's tavern". On December 3, 1818 he married Zoa Shed, a daughter of Zaccheus Shed. Their children were Nancy Shed (1820), Ellen Maria (1823), Mary E., who died on October 10, 1825 at thirteen months, and Mary Ellis and Abby Sumner, who were baptized with their older sisters at the First Church on October 11, 1829.
When his father-in-law died in 1822, the will named Harrod executor with power "to sell at public auction all my real estate". On April 17, 1823 he struck off the Shed homestead farm of about thirty acres on the great road, with thirty-two acres west of the Concord River and ten acres of woodland, to Samuel Bates of Boston for $2,925, taking back a mortgage for $1,950 of the price. When Bates sold the farm in 1825 to Fisher Howe of New York, Howe gave Harrod a mortgage of $1,000 on it.
In 1826, then called a yeoman, he sold his house and five and a half acres at the corner of the Newman farm to Reuben T. Robinson, a Boston painter, but in August 1829 Robinson sold the house lot back to him for $800 as "the same on which the said Harrod now dwells", and Harrod mortgaged it at once to William G. Shed, a trader. He then moved to Boston, where he was called a trader in 1831 and a joiner in 1833. In May 1831 he quitclaimed the house, subject to the mortgage, to the blacksmith Josiah B. Richardson and Josiah Stevens, and in 1833 a deputy sheriff sold his remaining equity in "a dwelling house and work shop adjoining said house" at the Corner to settle a judgment for Richardson. On November 20, 1834, with Zoa releasing her dower, he quitclaimed the house for $525 to the widow Sarah Kendall, a daughter of Thomas Richardson of the tavern, who lived there for more than thirty years. He was still of Boston in 1837, when a judgment against him and William Tyler was levied on Tyler's land in Billerica. No record of his death has been found.
