Lott Easty

Lott Easty

Lott Easty, whose name the records also spell Lot Easte and Eastey, was a blacksmith and later a storekeeper at the Canal Mills, the village now called North Billerica. He first appears in Billerica in 1833, when "Lot Easte of Chelmsford, blacksmith" bought for $1,000 a farm of about 55 acres on the Rangeway Road in the northwest part of the town, part of the old Dowse place, from Joseph Manning and Ebenezer Cowdrey of Chelmsford. He and his wife Mary F. had two sons recorded in Billerica, Joseph Elliot, born November 18, 1833, and Asa Franklin, born January 19, 1836. Easty added a blacksmith's shop to the farm, and in April 1837 he sold it, "with a dwelling house Barn shed and Blacksmiths shop," to Otis Lincoln, another blacksmith, for $1,500. The Otis Lincoln House was built later on the same farm. The 1840 census lists Easty's household in Billerica.

On March 12, 1845 he bought from Thomas R. Barrett, a trader, the lot at the Canal Mills that had held Anna Mears Wood's Red House, with a store near its northeast corner, for $1,225. He was still called a blacksmith in that deed, but by 1857 he was a trader, and the 1853 map shows the place as his. In December 1857 he and his neighbor Daniel Wilson exchanged properties. Easty sold Wilson the store lot for $1,000 and bought from him for $1,500 the house next door to the west, the Isaiah Bussey House, adding an eleven-foot strip along its west side in 1859. He also owned a woodlot near Winning's Pond, still called the Easty lot in the 1870s and 1880s.

In December 1865 Easty passed the house through W. S. Bates of Lowell to his wife, to hold in her own right, and the couple mortgaged it to Joseph Stearns in 1866 for $1,500, paying the loan off early in 1867. On June 28, 1869 they sold the house and its half acre to Oren Sheldon for $2,000. The next day Sheldon sold it to Charles P. Talbot and Thomas Talbot, whose woolen mill stood across the road. The Billerica records show nothing of the family after that sale.
