Benoni (b. 1760-12-18) Thomas (b. 1770-12-25) |
Lieut. Asa Spaulding was a farmer in the west part of Billerica, near the Chelmsford and Carlisle lines, and a town officer of the Revolutionary years. He was born on May 26, 1729, a son of Benoni Spaulding and Rebecca Spaulding, on the family farm by the Rangeway. His father's will, made in 1744 and proved in January 1753, left "all my Lands and Buildings" to Asa and his brother Edward.
On January 10, 1750 he married Anna Crosby, whom Hazen describes as a half-sister of his brother Edward's wife, Susanna Crosby. Their children were Anna (1751), who married Isaac Barron; Rebecca (1753), who died in infancy; Asa (1755), who married Julia Danforth, daughter of Timothy Danforth, and died without children in 1839; Rebecca (1758), who died at four; Benoni (1760); Sibbel (1763), who married Ephraim Robbins of Carlisle; Rachel (1764), who married Jeremiah Warren of Chelmsford; Esther (1767); and Thomas (1770).
Spaulding added to the farm. In 1774 he bought 55 acres of upland and meadow west of the Concord River "with all the Fences and Buildings" from Isaac Barron, and in 1783 a 92-acre farm "with a Dwelling House" on the Chelmsford line from William Bonner. In 1782 an Asa Spaulding, trader, bought the former homestead of Capt. Solomon Pollard between the Chelmsford road and the Concord River near the bridge, and in 1792 Asa and Anna Spaulding sold it to Henry Newman of Boston, reserving the dower of Julia, wife of their son Asa. On the tax list of 1776 Hazen placed him in the west part of the town, at what was later the Simonds place.
He was a selectman from 1769 to 1771. In February 1776 the widow of Jacob Crosby, who had died in the army, asked that Lieutenant Asa Spaulding be given the administration of her husband's estate. Hazen's list of Billerica soldiers names an Asa Spaulding in the service of 1775 and 1776, without saying whether it was the father or his son Asa.
In November 1799 he sold his son Thomas, for $2,000, a farm of about 189 acres running from the Rangeway south to the Carlisle line "including all the buildings," with 35 acres west of the Concord River that he had bought that September from Thomas Brown Jr. (see Horace N. Wilson House). His will, made September 26, 1808, gave his wife Anna the westerly bedroom of his house and her yearly provisions, his son Asa the 48-acre Miller place and other land in Carlisle, his son Benoni about a hundred acres "with the buildings" south of the Rangeway toward Chelmsford (see John Duren House), and Thomas the rest of his land north of the Rangeway, with $200 to each of his daughters. He died on February 9, 1815, aged 86, and is buried in the North Cemetery. Anna died on July 15, 1817, aged 90.

Benoni Spaulding, "very sick and weak in body", left his wife Easther the use of a third of his estate and gave "to my Two Sones Edward Spaulding and Asy Spaulding all my Lands and Buildings and Movable Estate yt is without Doors", charging them with legacies to his daughters Rebecca Adams and Joanah Spaulding and with keeping a horse for their mother. Proved Jan. 8, 1753, with administration to Edward and Asa when the executor, his cousin Jonathan Spaulding of Chelmsford, declined. The inventory of Jan. 23, 1753 values "the Real Estate, Lands, & buildings" at 2,000 pounds old tenor. This is the farm from which Asa later sold his son Thomas the 189 acres on the Rangeway (1799).
