Ichabod Everett
Ichabod Everett (about 1765 to 1851) was a farmer who owned the old Pollard tavern farm a few rods north of the meetinghouse in Billerica Centre for more than thirty years, and a selectman of the town from 1826 to 1830.
He was living in Boston when he married Martha Richardson of Billerica on February 20, 1812. She was born on October 20, 1780, a daughter of Stephen Richardson and Mary Wilson. On February 2, 1819, still described as "of Boston," Everett paid John Crosby $4,000 for "the homestead situate a few rods north of the meeting house in said Billerica containing fifty six acres be it more or less with all the buildings thereon," which Crosby had bought the year before at the auction held by the guardian of the young heir of Francis Pollard. The deed reserved to the widow Alice Bridge the right "to pasture one cow on the above described premises during her natural life." The house was the Ensign Jonathan Danforth Jr. House, where Capt. Solomon Pollard had kept his tavern; Everett made it a private house again and lived there for the rest of his life.
Everett was one of the appraisers of the estate of William Richardson in 1826. In 1837 he was one of the thirteen townsmen who bought the Billerica Academy building from Marshall Preston, and in 1844 he joined the other owners in selling their shares to John Baldwin. He sold two small pieces of his farm: in May 1844 an acre on the north to his neighbor William Blanchard, and on October 14, 1846, for $250, an acre on the east side of the main street to Dr. Zadock Howe. This was the "Everett Lot" of Howe's will, on which the trustees later built the Howe School.
Martha Everett died of apoplexy on November 6, 1848, aged 68. The couple had no children of their own but brought up an adopted daughter, Julia Ann, who married Abel Spaulding Jr. of Chelmsford on January 30, 1849. Hazen calls her Julia Ann Currier, a daughter of Isaac Currier; the town's marriage record names her Julia Ann Everett, daughter of Isaac and Lucy (Currier). The census of 1850 lists Everett, a farmer of 82, with Julia A. Spalding in his household.
Ichabod Everett died in 1851 without a will, "leaving no widow nor children," and Dudley Foster was appointed administrator on October 14, 1851. The appraisers valued his real estate at $11,920 and his personal estate at $5,010.41. His heirs at law, among them Issachar Everett of Wrentham, Ira, William and Oliver B. Everett and Hepsibah Fales, sold the sixty-two acre farm "which has been called or known as the Everett homestead" to Abel Spaulding Jr. in two deeds in 1852. Everett is buried in the Old South Cemetery.

Probate #19191 |
William Richardson, husband of Joseph Danforth's daughter Sally (Sarah), died in June 1826; his widow declined administration and Marshall Preston was appointed June 27, 1826. The inventory (Joseph Blanchard, Josiah Stevens, Ichabod Everett) shows a stage and livery business: ten horses, four stage harnesses, an old stage coach, a covered wagon, a blacksmith shop and a hop house. Debts of more than $20,000 made the estate insolvent, and on Feb. 13, 1827 the administrator was licensed to sell the real estate. The widow's dower (return of April 3, 1827) was a fifteen-acre lot east of the Shawshin and a pew; no dwelling house is named, since the family lived on Danforth land.
