William H. Sexton (about 1855 to 1936) was the blacksmith of Billerica Centre for more than twenty years and later, with his wife, Clara E. Sexton, a dealer in land and house lots around the Centre. He served the town as a Bowers Fund Commissioner and as a Town Assessor, chairman of the assessors through the years of the First World War.
The Sextons came to Billerica in 1879, when Clara E. Sexton, then of New Boston, New Hampshire, bought Lund T. Eastman's lot on the east side of the Boston road south of the Common, with the L.T. Eastman Blacksmith Shop at the road and the house behind it, the Lund T. Eastman House. Sexton worked the shop as a blacksmith and horseshoer. From 1887 the town paid him every year for shoeing the town's horses and for repairing its carts and sleighs, the hearse, the town hall settees and even the ballot box, and in 1892 he sold the town a supply wagon. The 1889 map shows two buildings on the lot under his name. In 1892 Clara put the lot in his name through a straw deed to John Sexton, and in November 1900 he sold it to Susan U. Phillips. The 1901 directory still lists him as a blacksmith and horseshoer on the Boston road near the Common.
Clara Sexton held most of the family's land in her own right as the only heir of Mary H. Crosby, and he joined in her deeds. In 1906 the couple sold five acres of the old Crosby farm on Boston Road to Frank A. Fitzgerald. By 1912 the directory called Sexton a farmer, living on Concord Road opposite Charnstaffe Lane, and from 1916 a real estate dealer. In 1914 he and his wife bought from Richard Austin fourteen acres running from Concord Road to the Concord River and six acres on Bedford Street. They registered the land in the Land Court in 1915 and sold it off as house lots along Concord Road and the new Richardson, Whiting and Parker streets (see William Mann House). When the town looked for a site for a new high school, about five acres of his south of the Whiting estate on Bedford Road were one of the three sites offered, at $5,000. On March 31, 1920 the Sextons bought from Harry W. Essex the old Cumings house at 36 Concord Road, now the Clara E. Sexton House, and made it their home. He also lent money on mortgage; in 1924 he took a $500 mortgage from Gardner E. Spaulding on Hillside Farm on Andover Road.
In 1902 he was drawn as a traverse juror. At the annual meeting of 1903 the town chose him to the Bowers Fund Committee for five years, after voting down a motion to put Fred H. Parker in his place. He was elected an assessor in 1915, beating Charles H. Kemp by 235 votes to 228, and sat on the board with Kemp and Edward A. King, serving as its chairman for three years from 1916 and as a member until 1921. In January 1918 he joined Edgar P. Sellew and Richard T. Perry on the Billerica Fuel Committee, which fixed local coal prices and rationed the supply in the coal shortage of the war winter, while Mrs. Sexton took charge of food saving under the local food administrator.
Clara E. Sexton died on April 10, 1936 and left the Concord Road house to the Billerica Historical Society. He settled her estate as executor and died in Billerica on October 9 of the same year, aged 81. His estate was administered by Dr. Frederic H. Sexton of Halifax, Nova Scotia, a native of Billerica who had become Commissioner of Technical Education of Nova Scotia. A Fred H. Sexton and a Howard Sexton were pupils in the town's schools in 1890, and in 1922 the Sextons gave the schools books from the library of the late W. Howard Sexton, of the class of 1898.

Sexton's estate (N.905/239, 1937), for $225 he grants "The land in Billerica ... containing twenty (20) acres more or less", beginning "at Salem Road" (now Andover Road) and bounded by John Baldwin's land and "a wall on the side of the old road leading to Fox Hill". The affidavit recites the notice in The Billerica News of April 15, 22 and 29, 1943 and the auction "upon the premises" on Saturday, May 8, 1943, where M. Edward Riney, auctioneer, sold this parcel to Holman, "the highest bid". The mortgage had also covered 16 and 4 acres on the road to the meetinghouse, "Being the same premises conveyed to me by Earl Pease by his deed dated February 23, 1924", sold the same day to other buyers.
