Caroline Hunt Haynes
Caroline Hunt Haynes was the wife of the Billerica innholder and farmer Lyman Haynes, and she is remembered with him by the public drinking fountain that their daughter gave the town, placed at Brown's Corner in 1920. She and Lyman lived first in Sudbury, where their son Tilly Haynes was born in 1828, and came to Billerica in 1833, when Lyman bought the tavern stand in front of the meetinghouse in the Center (the Fletcher Hotel), which they kept until 1849. The town records give the births of their children Cyrus H. on July 8, 1833, Charles R. on April 17, 1836, William H. on April 21, 1839, Caroline on January 26, 1841, Lucy Ann on December 1, 1843, John on September 18, 1846 and Adeline on May 28, 1849; little Lucy Ann died on September 21, 1845. As Lyman's wife she released her dower in his many sales of land from 1833 to 1862.
From 1854 the family lived in the former homestead of Marshall Preston on the Boston road in the Center (the Marshall Preston House). Lyman's will gave her the use of all his real estate for life and made her sole executrix, and after it was proved in February 1869 she went to live in Springfield, where her sons were. In October 1869 she and the children sold the homestead to William Blanchard for $3,500 and took back his mortgage; the same year she joined Anthony Jones and Dudley Foster in buying the last ninth of the old Joel Dix homestead at North Billerica, and in November she and the heirs sold the Haynes third of the Mears Tavern and Dix property to Jones and Foster. She is not among the heirs of Lyman Haynes who sold the last of his and Foster's land, the Ditson Plain, in 1896.
Her daughter Caroline Haynes Jenkins, of Newton at her death, left the town $1,000 for a drinking fountain "in memory of Lyman Haynes and Caroline Haynes", and the annual town meeting of 1920 voted to place it at Brown's Corner, the junction of Pollard Street and Boston Road.
