Job Hill (1754-1842) farmed for more than half a century on the old road from Billerica to Concord in South Billerica, beside his family's mill. He was born on May 29, 1754, the son of Jonathan Hill of Hill's Mills and Mary Lane. Hazen puts him on the town's 1776 tax list at the place later called Mr. Perrin's.
The farm had been Thomas Hall's. After Hall died in 1772 his widow sold most of it to Job's father, and on February 25, 1785 Jonathan Hill sold Job and his brother Josiah Hill 40 1/2 acres "in the Southerly part of said Town" for 152 pounds. That November the brothers also bought at public auction the dower of Hall's widow, 21 1/2 acres on the west side of the Bedford road "with the Dwelling House & that part of the Barn standing thereon." Job took the part toward the mill, where he lived in the Job Hill House on what is now Dudley Road, with his barn across the road; Josiah's share lay to the south. In 1793 his father sold him another meadow of 2 1/2 acres, and in 1796 the brothers divided a Carlisle woodlot left them by their father's will. In 1791 the town voted to set the south ward schoolhouse "at the head of Job Hill's lane," and it stood on a corner of his farm without any deed.
On January 19, 1790 he married Susanna Blanchard, daughter of Simon Blanchard. Their children were Asenath (1790); Job (1791), who died in 1814; Jonathan (1795); Daniel (1797); David and Susanna, baptized together in 1800, Susanna dying the next year; Susanna Lane (1803); and Lucretia (1807), who married Sewall Stearns in 1836.
He was a careful neighbor and lender. He bought lots at the vendue of Samuel Stearns's estate in 1801, and in 1818 he and Thomas Russell of West Cambridge took a mortgage of the saw mill farm of Abner Stearns to secure them on a $600 note they had signed with him to Isaac Hastings of Lexington, in trust for the town. After his brother Jonathan Hill died in 1815, the guardian of Jonathan's children recorded $16 received "of Mr. Job Hill for the use of the Mill" in 1816. In 1829 he sold Josiah three acres opposite the house where Josiah's son Elijah B. Hill lived.
Job Hill died on February 5, 1842, aged 87, and was buried in the Hill Cemetery. His will, made in 1837, left $700 each and the household furniture to his unmarried daughters Asenath and Susan Lane Hill, $250 to Lucretia Stearns, $50 to his son Daniel if he came to Billerica in person within three years, and the bed, the clock and all the rest of his estate to his son Jonathan, who kept the farm until his own death in 1870.

| May 17, 1815 | Administration and Dower | Estate of Jonathan Hill of Billerica, yeoman, intestate | Mary Hill, widow (dower), and children Mary, Anna, Jonathan and David Hill | Named as abutter in the appraisal of his brother Jonathan's estate, 1815 | Jonathan Hill House Hill's Mills Jonathan Hill Barn Concord Road Corporate Center |
Probate #11475 |
Jonathan Hill died intestate early in 1815. His widow Mary declined the administration, and Samuel Whiting of Billerica was appointed administrator on Feb. 28, 1815 (bond $30,000 with Joseph Locke and Jeremiah Farmer). The inventory by Peter Hill, Timothy Stearns and Josiah Hill (March 23, 1815) values "the homestead of said deceased in said Billerica estimated at 150 acres with all the buildings thereon, except the grist-mill" at $5,050, the grist mill at $440 and 13 1/4 acres of woodland in Bedford at $600. The committee to set off dower (Whiting, Peter Hill and Josiah Hill) appraised the real estate: the lot east of the road to Concord, about 98 acres, bounded by the road, Job Hill, the heirs of Jonathan Stickney, Nutting's Pond, Isaac French and the heirs of Joseph Hill ($1,940); the lot west of the road, 70 acres to the Concord River, between the heirs of Joseph Hill and John Stearns, Job Hill and Josiah Hill ($2,020); Long Meadow; the Bedford woodlot; the dwelling house ($600), barn and hovels ($180), mill house and cider mill, corn house and hog sty, grist mill and two pews, $6,200 in all. On May 17, 1815 they set off to the widow about 45 acres east of the road, meadow, woodland and old field, one third of the grist mill and pews, and "one half of the dwelling house (viz.) the west room, bed room, west chamber, and garret over it together with the middle chamber" ($300), the kitchen, meal chamber, well room, milk room and woodhouse to be used in common. The return also provides for the cow that "Jonathan Hill, father of Jonathan Hill deceased" ordered kept for his daughter Susanna. On April 4, 1815 Timothy Stearns of Billerica was appointed guardian of the four minor children Mary, Anna, Jonathan and David at their mother's request (case 11476). Middlesex probate case 11475.

On April 4, 1815, at the widow Mary Hills request, Timothy Stearns of Billerica was appointed guardian of the four children of Jonathan Hill, "all minors under the age of fourteen years" (bond $30,000 with Samuel Whiting and Isaac Hurd Jr.). After Stearns died, Mary (over fourteen) chose Joel Fitch of Bedford on Sept. 5, 1816, and Fitch was also appointed for Anna, Jonathan and David. The account of Stearnss executor, Elijah Stearns (June 1817), shows the mill at work for the heirs: "cash received for the toll of the gristmill," $9.77 in July 1815; "of Mr. Job Hill for the use of the Mill," $16 in June 1816; and a payment "for mending the Mill dam." On March 29, 1825 Fitch gave bond to sell the minors half of the farm under a license of the Supreme Judicial Court, and posted notice of a "Public Auction ... on Friday the twenty ninth day of April next ... on the premises, two undivided fourth parts of two thirds of the farm, two story dwelling house, Barn, Cider Mill, Grist Mill & other convenient out buildings ... about two miles from Billerica meeting house on the road leading from Billerica to Concord, formerly the estate of Jonathan Hill."
